This event will also serve as a fundraiser with proceeds going to local 501c3’s Charity, support the Johns Island Local Schools focusing on reading programs. The program BEGIN WITH BOOKS introduces infants and toddlers to the very concept of reading, unvlocking vast potential through the discovery that books exist, that books contain knowledge, and that books can be accessed by anyone.

BEGIN WITH BOOKS is a pre-school literacy program based on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Its objective is to improve literacy by encouraging parents to read to their babies and toddlers and by giving them the resources to do it: children’s books.

Through our partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Palmetto Project, we launched BEGIN WITH BOOKS in August 2010 and now serve 12 communities, including Adams Run, Awendaw, Charleston Peninsula, Edisto, Folly Beach, Hollywood, Johns Island, McClellanville, North Charleston zip 29405, Ravenel, Wadmalaw Island, and West Ashley. As of January 2017, over 3,800 Charleston-area children are enrolled and receiving a brand-new book in the mail every month!

FREE BOOKS. Every child UP TO 4 YEARS OLD in the designated zones is eligible to receive one book per month until his/her fifth birthday. Parents register their children in outreach events or by mail. The books are age-appropriate, culturally diverse, and are mailed directly to children’s homes. Books are paid for by grants and donations and are absolutely free to participating families.

OUTREACH. BEGIN WITH BOOKS is bringing much-needed resources to Charleston County. In addition to books, we provide dozens of outreach events in our service areas each year. These programs stress the importance of reading aloud to children and provide other resources to support early childhood development.

COST. BEGIN WITH BOOKS is affordable. The cost is only $33 per child per year. There are approximately 8,000 age -eligible children in our current service areas (Adams Run, Awendaw, Charleston’s Peninsula, Edisto, Folly Beach, Hollywood, Johns Island, McClellanville, North Charleston zip 29405, Ravenel, Wadmalaw Island, and West Ashley). With 60% registration, the cost to sustain this program is about $160,000 per year, which will deliver 60,000 books directly to children’s homes!

FUNDING. We are seeking individual donations and corporate sponsorships for this exciting program. Gifts as small as $33 are meaningful, since a gift in this amount will buy a year’s worth of books for a child. But larger, multiyear gifts are critical to maintain the program for years to come.

Logos of the top business or foundation sponsor(s) are prominently displayed in the registration brochures and other print matter which is distributed throughout the community.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? We need $110,000 more per year to extend services to the 6,000 children of North Charleston remaining zip codes. Your gift can make a big difference in one child’s life or many. Help us grow!

RESULTS. Reading is the main route to learning, and more and more studies are affirming that early childhood exposure to books and reading is critical to success in school. Evaluations of Imagination Library programs across the country show that participating parents spend more time reading to their children than they did before. In addition, participating children show:
+ Increased interest in books.
+ Increased excitement about reading.
+ Increased time looking at and playing
with books on their own.
+ Improved learning attributes when they reach school.

REWARDS. With the spotlight on literacy in Charleston area schools and the challenges of our education system, it is urgent to tackle literacy at the earliest stages of childhood development. BEGIN WITH BOOKS is a strong reinforcement tool for social services programs that are striving to overcome literacy hurdles and build parent capacity.

Imagine how the monthly arrival of a new book will encourage curiosity and foster an excitement about reading in the entire family. By putting books in the home, in the hands of babies, older siblings, and parents, BEGIN WITH BOOKS can improve literacy and reading habits for entire families.
